Bureau of Engraving and Printing
Washington, DC

Executive Summary

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is a component of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The BEP is the largest producer of security documents in the United States.  The BEP prints billions of Federal Reserve Notes for delivery to the Federal Reserve System each year.    The Washington, DC facility of the BEP provides its 2,400 employees with a fitness center to promote employee health, nutrition, fitness and wellness.

On-Site Need

The BEP programs had been in existence for more then eight years.  The majority of program components put in place by previous vendors had stagnated and did not answer the needs of management or the work culture.  The BEP needed to completely reengineer its existing fitness and wellness programs.

In addition to daily operational services and traditional club management, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing wanted to integrate wellness and fitness programs that would minimize occupational injuries, improve employee fitness and capture the interest of the dominantly industrial employee population.  To effectively improve the value of services and increase its membership base, the BEP also needed to redesign its fitness center layout, update outdated equipment and remodel locker rooms.

Aquila Solutions

Aquila placed degreed and nationally certified staff to effectively manage daily operations for the BEP Fitness Center.  To reengineer BEP’s existing fitness and wellness programs, Aquila implemented the Baun Health Promotion Reengineering Project Model and Benchmarking Processes. Aquila identified health and fitness targets and intervention techniques and then designed wellness, fitness and group fitness programs that it adapted to the population of industrial employees.  The programs educated the employees about exercise benefits, healthy lifestyles and nutritional choices.  Furthermore, Aquila’s staff supported the development of a healthy culture and relapse prevention strategies.

To expand on traditional offerings, Aquila concentrated on Ergonomic Programs and Worker Readiness Programs.  The Aquila Staff at BEP encouraged, educated and supported positive behavior changes.

In addition to the above programs, Aquila organized support groups, reminder systems, implemented incentive & motivational fitness and wellness programs.  Aquila’s staff performed a variety of biometric screenings and targeted health interventions and made available to the employees a menu of personal training services and personal counseling sessions with Aquila exercise physiologists.  Aquila also designed a full schedule of group fitness classes consisting of over 15 classes a week that included yoga, Pilates-based mat, flexibility, abs and core, cardiovascular and strength classes.

Furthermore, Aquila worked with selected equipment manufacturers and reworked the fitness center space layout and updated the fitness equipment.  This reworking considerably improved customer satisfaction and increased the membership base.

Client Benefits

The Aquila team delivered the initial project requirements in two weeks.  Aquila reengineered BEP’s existing programs put in place by previous vendors and removed ineffective service components.  Aquila increased fitness center usage, perceived value of on-site fitness and wellness services, and overall customer satisfaction.

“The services Aquila has supplied to BEP and the members of the Fitness Center have been outstanding.” said Pattie Ware, Business Team Analyst. “The exercise programs offered by Aquila have increased the membership from 465 to 561.”

Cost Minimization

Implementation costs were approximately one fifth less than similar programs but delivered equal or greater benefits.

Awards

The Aquila program & management won 2005 NOVA 7 "Fitness Management" Award for one of the best innovative programs in the category.
