Health Partners Health Partners is the Philadelphia area’s only health plan owned by a partnership of local hospitals and the largest Medicaid plan in Philadelphia. Health Partners serves over 145,000 children, women and men. This not-for-profit partnership includes some of the nation’s most prestigious hospitals and hospital systems. On-Site Needs Health Partners wanted to expand its member education programs through offering on-site and off-site community wellness and fitness education and activities. Health Partners was already in the managed health care business, but it needed a professional work force to provide fitness instructional programs that would effectively capture an off-site member population. Health Partners needed efficient fitness solutions that would provide long-term member behavioral change and thus help reduce health care claim costs. The company also required the fitness programs to simultaneously capture five off-site locations, provide diverse and minority-oriented programming and deliver a positive customer response. Aquila Solutions Aquila’s staff provided Health Partners with fitness and wellness educational seminars that covered topics such as stress management, nutrition, fitness, family health, cardiovascular disease prevention and more. In addition to the Health Partners member program, Aquila’s staff delivered on-site group fitness classes and fitness educational workshops to Health Partners Headquarters. Aquila developed internal promotional and marketing tools to ensure program effectiveness and interest. A series of monthly indoor and outdoor exhibits, events and giveaways resulted in a significant increase of member appeal for programs. As a final point, Aquila implemented direct customer feedback systems and a quality improvement (QI) program which thoroughly controlled the quality and on-going success rate, adjusting and fine tuning programs at all stages. This program resulted in improved participation numbers and a better long-term retention rate. Client Benefits The Health Partners solution provides much more than traditional on-site fitness staffing. It links various components of traditional staffing with constant attention to customer response, sensitivity to change, attention to detail and program diversity. This, in return, resulted in the fitness program’s success and increased long-term retention rate. “The services Aquila has supplied to our company and our members have been outstanding. On-the-job exercise programs were very instrumental in reducing stress as well as waistlines,” said Ernestine Delmoor, MPH, Member Education Department, Health Partners. “The participants in the community love the classes and it shows in the attendance. The variety of the consultants and the routines keeps the interest in the classes going in addition to the overall benefits of exercise.” By outsourcing its fitness services to Aquila, Health Partners was able to obtain an experienced fitness team and therefore increase the effectiveness of its fitness programs. Cost Minimization Implementation costs were approximately 15 percent less than similar programs but delivered equal or greater benefits.
